Natural Selection:

Natural selection is a topic that is debated every day between scientists. Natural selection, although it may seem to be simple, is a long and very complicated process. Natural selection can be broken up into five different parts:

1. Animals and plants produce more offspring than can survive.

2. Because of competition, the majority of these animals die.

3. The animals that survive are best fit to survive, because of characteristics that they had.

4. These characteristics get passed on to the next generation of the animal or plant.

5. These new animals or plants have new traits, and they pass them on to their offspring.

When the plate tectonics created the isolated habitat of the Lemur, natural selection began to take effect. The ape-like creatures that had lived in Africa shrunk and condensed their bodies to survive and adapt. They passed on the appropriate genes in a way that their own species could survive. They broke off into smaller specie groups and evolved more completely. Their survival today stems from their past ability to respond and adapt to the pressures of their environment.
